Located at 260 Peiraios Street in Tavros, Athens, Peiraios 260 sits near the Athens School of Fine Arts. This spot was once the Tsaousoglou furniture factory. The complex designed in the 1970s shows industrial architecture. The Ministry of Culture and Sports has even classified these large buildings and sheds as historical monuments. They are recognized for their unique architecture.
Imagine this place buzzing with the sounds of machinery. It was a furniture factory. Then it closed and the National Bank of Greece took ownership. In 2006 a new chapter began. Part of the site was given to the Athens Epidaurus Festival. This was thanks to an agreement with the National Bank of Greece. Giorgos Loukos was the festival’s artistic director. He had a vision.
Loukos created four new theatre stages within Peiraios 260. His goal was clear. He wanted to make the festival more accessible. He wanted to use alternative venues. These venues would complement the Herodes Atticus Conservatory. They would also enhance the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus. The Little Theatre of Epidaurus would also be included.
In the early 2010s discussions arose. Could part of the ownership be conceded? The Greek Ministry of Culture and Sports was considered as a potential recipient. The goal was to house services there. This relocation is expected to finish during 2025.
Since 2006 the Athens Epidaurus Festival has produced events at Peiraios 260. The former industrial buildings host music dance and theatre throughout the summer.
Consider some past highlights. In 2018 the Athens Epidaurus Festival kicked off with a music event. It transformed Peiraios 260 into a dance floor. DJ sets across three stages featured internationally acclaimed artists. Contemporary electronic music filled the air.
Leon of Athens also performed at Peiraios 260. He played covers and songs from his album Xenos. He was joined by 25 female vocalists. Alexandros Livitsanos arranged their diverse music styles.
A Latin party once echoed through Peiraios 260. Apurimac played mambo cha-cha bolero and salsa. Martha Moreleón and Mariza Rizou took the audience on a journey. It spanned from Brazil to Cuba Colombia and Argentina.
Giannis Bezos and Iro Bezou dedicated an evening to poets of defeat. They celebrated Manolis Anagnostakis Giannis Theodorakis and Tasos Livaditis. Their performance highlighted breathtaking poems.
