The Panagia Portaitissa icon holds immense historical and religious significance. It’s considered miraculous a wonder-working image venerated for centuries. Tradition says it was painted by Saint Luke the Evangelist himself. It’s more than a painting. It’s a living testament to faith and perseverance.
Our story begins during the turbulent era of Byzantine Iconoclasm. The Emperor Theophilus decreed the destruction of religious images. A devout widow in Nicaea owned the Portaitissa icon. Fearful of its destruction she cast it into the sea. The icon miraculously floated upright drifting towards the west.
The widow’s son later became a monk on Mount Athos. He recounted his mother’s story. Centuries later the icon reappeared off the coast of Mount Athos. Monks witnessed a pillar of fire reaching the heavens. Saint Gabriel a monk from the Iveron Monastery saw a vision. The Virgin Mary guided him to retrieve the icon. He walked on water a miracle mirroring the icon’s own journey.
The icon was initially placed in the monastery’s church. But mysteriously it repeatedly reappeared at the monastery gate. The Virgin Mary appeared to Saint Gabriel explaining her desire. She wished to protect the monks not to be protected by them. The icon’s new location above the gate earned it the name Portaitissa meaning “She who resides by the door”. A chapel was built for the icon near the gate solidifying its role as protector of the monastery.
The Panagia Portaitissa continues to be a focal point. Miracles are still attributed to it. Its presence on Mount Athos is seen as a guarantee of protection for Athonite monasticism. This scar this small imperfection on the face of the Virgin Mary serves as a reminder. It reminds us of the trials and tribulations that this icon has overcome.
