Delving into the academic realm, we uncover the Pedagogical Department of Primary Education, nestled within the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. Right here, at the Department of Pedagogy and Primary Education, we explore its fascinating history. Established between 1984 and 1985, this department has played a vital role in shaping Greece’s educational landscape. Officially recognized by Presidential Decree 320 in 1983, the department found its home at number 13A Navarinou Street, Athens. The decree outlines its establishment and mission within the university framework. This location houses the Pedagogical Department of Primary Education, responsible for training educators specializing in preschool education and pedagogy. It was founded by notable figures like Arman Sperg, I. Rizos, and Christian Samaltz, to name a few. Interestingly, the university’s name, “National and Kapodistrian University of Athens,” honors Ioannis Kapodistrias, the first head of state of independent Greece. The university has a rich history. It officially opened its doors on May 3, 1837. The initial name was the “Othonian University,” named after King Otto. It began with 33 professors and just 52 students. Later, in 1911, it was renamed “National University.” Then, after the Asia Minor Catastrophe in 1922, and Greece’s subsequent population exchange with Turkey, it gained its final title “National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.” Today, this esteemed university has significantly grown. It has five locations across Athens, offering programs like Early Childhood Education within the Department of Pedagogy and Primary Education. The department also offers postgraduate studies, ensuring comprehensive pedagogical development.
