Marvelous isn’t it? This seemingly unassuming church before us the Church of the Holy Apostles is a treasure trove of history. It stands as a silent witness to centuries of Athenian life nestled within the ancient Agora.

The Church of the Holy Apostles also known as the Holy Apostles of Solaki is more than just a place of worship. It’s a captivating blend of ancient and Byzantine architecture. It’s the first significant church of the Middle Byzantine period in Athens. It marks the beginning of the so-called Athenian type successfully combining simple four-pier with cross-in-square forms. Imagine the builders the architects who shaped this unique space over a thousand years ago.

Construction began around the tenth century. This wasn’t on empty land though. The church was cleverly built partly over a second-century nymphaion a Roman-era structure dedicated to nymphs. How intriguing to think of the layers of history beneath our feet. The nymphs once revered by the ancients now share this space with the apostles.

The Church of the Holy Apostles isn’t just old it’s unique. It’s a tetraconch church. This means its four arms end in rounded conches unlike any other Byzantine building in Athens. This gives it a unique eight-petalled flower design making it architecturally singular.

The church has seen changes over the centuries. Various repairs and reconstructions have been carried out. It was even restored between 1954 and 1957 to its original form. Yet despite these renovations the original floor plan endures. A cross with apses on four sides a narthex on the west and four columns supporting a dome.

The marble altar and floor are long gone but some original elements remain. Notice the tiles on the outer walls. They feature Kufic-like decorative patterns. These are subtle hints of its long and storied past. Even the icons inside though from the seventeenth century still contribute to the atmosphere. They arrived later but they add to the layered narrative of this place.

The name Solaki might refer to a family who sponsored a renovation. It might also derive from the densely populated area surrounding the church in the nineteenth century. This was a bustling place once. A parish church among many buildings a vibrant center of life. Then the American School’s excavations for the ancient Agora took place. Homes and buildings were razed. The Church of the Holy Apostles stood alone now a solitary sentinel in the heart of history.

Stand here for a moment let the history wash over you. This isn’t just a church. It is a story a testament to the enduring spirit of Athens a place where the ancient world and the Byzantine era intertwine creating something truly unique and captivating. The Church of the Holy Apostles a true Athenian gem.
