She was a prominent figure in the National Resistance and a key player in the women’s movement. The house itself became a haven for resistance fighters during World War II.
In 1944, Lela Karagianni was arrested by the Gestapo for her courageous acts of defiance. She was imprisoned and tortured, but her spirit remained unbroken. Following her release, she continued her activism. She worked tirelessly for the rights of women and the betterment of society. The Oikia Lelas Karagianni later served as a cultural center for the city of Athens. It played host to countless exhibitions and events. This continued until 1995.

The START program, also housed within the Oikia Lelas Karagianni, offers training in coding and robotics. It empowers individuals and encourages civic engagement within the community.
