Wonder why the ceramic elements adorn the exterior? Today we explore the Metamorphosis Sotiros Church. This beautiful small church stands on the northern foothills of the Acropolis. It sits near Theorias and Klepsydras streets. The Metamorphosis Sotiros Church is on the edge of Anafiotika in Plaka.

Let’s step back in time to the Middle Byzantine years. Specifically, we’re going to the third quarter of the 11th century. That’s when the Metamorphosis Sotiros Church was built. Originally, it was a simple cross-in-square church without a narthex. Of its initial form, only the north side and the dome survive today. The other sides were altered. This was due to expansions to enlarge the interior area.

During the Turkish occupation from 1456 to 1833 interventions occurred. Look at the northern side. You can see the pointed arch. This is a characteristic of Ottoman architecture. The Metamorphosis Sotiros Church is small. It features three semi-circular arches on the eastern side. A rectangular chapel is annexed on the southern one. This chapel was carved on the rock.

The walls of Metamorphosis Sotiros are built with the cloisonné system of masonry. The exterior is decorated with ceramic elements. These include cufic designs. These designs imitated Arabic letters and rhomb shapes. Zigzags add to the visual appeal. The dome is the usual Athenian type. It is octagonal elegant and tall. Marble columns sit on the corners. Lobe windows decorate the dome.

The care and supervision comes from the Ephorate of Antiquities of Athens. The Holy Metropolis is the Archdiocese of Athens. Want to visit? Find the Metamorphosis Sotiros Church at Theorias and Klepsydras in Plaka. You can get there via the Syntagma Metro Station.

Each year on August 6th the church celebrates. This day marks the Transfiguration of Christ. This references Jesus’ transformation. It occurred on Mount Tabor. The Metamorphosis Sotiros Church is a gem of Byzantine architecture. It is a testament to Athens’ long history. Take a moment to appreciate its beauty. Consider the many layers of history within its walls. As we continue our tour, remember the Metamorphosis Sotiros Church. It is a small but significant landmark in Athens.
