“Did you hear about the church that changed its appearance?” That’s essentially what Metamorphosis Sotiros means. We are standing before a testament to Athens’ long and varied past. This small church, also known as the Church of the Transfiguration of Christ, has seen centuries unfold.

Metamorphosis Sotiros is nestled on the northern foothills of the Acropolis. It is near the intersection of Theorias and Klepsydras streets. This puts us on the edge of Anafiotika, a picturesque district in Plaka.

This church dates back to the Middle Byzantine era. More specifically, it was built in the third quarter of the 11th century. Originally, it was dedicated to Virgin Mary the Saviour.

Only the north side and the dome of the original structure remain. Expansions altered the other sides to enlarge the interior. Interventions occurred during the Turkish occupation from 1456 to 1833. A pointed arch on the northern side is a telltale sign of Ottoman architecture.

Metamorphosis Sotiros is a simple cross-in-square church without a narthex. The eastern side features three semi-circular arches. A rectangular chapel is carved into the rock on the southern side. The walls showcase the cloisonné system of masonry. They are decorated with ceramic elements. Look for cufic designs imitating Arabic letters plus rhomb shapes and zigzags. The dome is an “Athenian” type. It is octagonal elegant and tall. Marble columns adorn the corners with lobed windows.

From 1847 to 1855, it even functioned as a Russian church. While 18th-century frescoes remain, its invaluable Byzantine-era frescoes are sadly lost.

The church is also called Sotira tou Kottaki. This references the Athenian family who once owned it.

The Metamorphosis Sotiros celebrates its feast day on August 6th.

Despite questionable renovations over the years Metamorphosis Sotiros still holds treasures. Rare religious artifacts remain. The church possesses remarkable icons. One such icon is a Virgin Mary from the 14th century. This small church has witnessed countless transformations. It stands as a symbol of enduring faith and architectural resilience.
