Gaze upon this bronze bust. It depicts Lela Karagianni a Greek heroine. This isn’t just any statue. It’s a testament to incredible bravery during World War II.

Lela Karagianni was born in 1898. She was a mother of seven. She lived a seemingly ordinary life in Athens. That changed with the Axis occupation of Greece. Lela became a pivotal figure in the Greek resistance.

Her husband was a pharmacist. Their home and pharmacy became a hub for the resistance. Lela secretly hid British soldiers. She provided them with medical care. She helped them escape the country. She also used the Saint Ierotheos Monastery in Megara as a base. She established a clandestine organization called “Bouboulina” named after her great-grandmother a famous Greek captain. This group gathered intelligence and spread crucial information.

The Germans discovered Lela’s activities. In July 1944 they arrested her. They tortured her at the SS headquarters on Merlin Street. This place was known as “Hell House” by some prisoners. She was then sent to Haidari concentration camp. Even imprisoned Lela continued to inspire resistance.

On September 8 1944 Lela was executed by firing squad in Dafni. She faced her death singing the Greek national anthem. She gave courage to her fellow prisoners. Her bravery is truly inspiring.

The Athens Academy honored Lela with a Gold Medallion. A full-length marble statue of her stands proudly in Athens. This bronze bust at the War Museum is another tribute. It ensures her legacy lives on. Lela’s story reminds us that even ordinary people can perform extraordinary acts of courage.
