The cemetery expanded over time. Catholic Protestant and Jewish sections were added. The grounds cover 225000 square meters. Over 12000 graves are here. The marble is mostly from Mount Pendeli. The original craftsmen were from Tinos an island known for its marble sculptors.

Many famous Greeks rest here. Melina Mercouri and Jules Dassin are buried here. So are Andreas Papandreou Odysseas Elytis George Seferis and Vassilis Tsitsanis. Their tombs are works of art themselves.
