“Is this where the magic happens?” a child whispered, gazing up at the Kivotos. The Kivotos, or Ark, in Athens isn’t a wooden vessel battling a mythical flood. This Ark is a haven. It’s a place where children, once lost in the storm of difficult circumstances, find safety and a new beginning. Founded in 1998 by Father Antonios Papanikolaou, a Greek Orthodox priest, the Kivotos began as a response to the plight of abandoned and vulnerable children in Athens. Father Antonios saw the need for a nurturing space, a place where these children could heal and grow. The Kivotos has become one of Greece’s most respected charities, with facilities across the country. It offers essential services, providing not just shelter and food but also love, education, and a sense of belonging. The children at Kivotos receive medical care, including dental and pharmaceutical support. They even learn valuable life skills, like beekeeping and farming at the facility in Epirus, preparing them for independence when they turn 18. Kivotos relies solely on donations. It receives no government funding. One touching story tells of a teenager from Ohio, Marina Tsirambidis, who donated her graduation money to help the children. She even expressed her desire to visit and volunteer at the Kivotos, embodying the spirit of compassion that fuels this vital organization. In 2018, Father Antonios’s dedication was recognized with the European Citizen’s Prize. This award acknowledges initiatives that contribute to European cooperation and the promotion of common values. The Kivotos truly is an ark, navigating the turbulent waters of hardship and offering a beacon of hope to children in need.
