Gazing upon Ι. Ν. Αγίου Γεωργίου, one can almost hear the echoes of history whispering from its weathered stones. This medieval church, also known as Agios Georgios Karytsis, stands as a quiet sentinel in the heart of Athens. Nestled behind the bustling Stadiou Street, Ι. Ν. Αγίου Γεωργίου has witnessed centuries of Athenian life. Its story begins in the 11th century, tied to the prominent Karytsis family. Ι. Ν. Αγίου Γεωργίου served as a gathering place for the community. It was here, within these very walls, that Athenians selected the delegation to greet King Othon’s arrival in Nafplion. The Greek Revolution of 1821 left its mark on Ι. Ν. Αγίου Γεωργίου, leaving the church in ruins. Yet, it persevered, a testament to its importance to the city. In the mid-1840s, architect Lysandros Kaftantzoglou, who also reconstructed the church of Agia Eirini, was tasked with rebuilding Ι. Ν. Αγίου Γεωργίου. The reconstruction, completed between 1845 and 1849, resulted in a three-aisle basilica with a dome. A striking feature is the central gate of grey marble, crowned by a white steeple. The church’s construction incorporated materials from an ancient and Byzantine-era cemetery that once existed on the site. The dome suffered a partial collapse in 1849, necessitating the addition of buttresses to the side walls. The magnificent iconostasis, crafted in 1895, and the bishop’s throne, added in 1901, are the works of renowned woodcarver Ioannis Magiasis. The church walls boast paintings by notable artists of the time, including Polychronis Lembesis, Dimos Georgantas, and Dimitrios Pelekasis. A unique detail is the oil painting of the parable of the blind, located on the northern wall near the sanctuary, a work by archaeologist Alexander Philadelpheus. Ι. Ν. Αγίου Γεωργίου stands not merely as a building, but as a living testament to the resilience and spirit of Athens. It has witnessed the city’s triumphs and tribulations, serving as a constant in the ever-changing landscape of history. As you stand before it, imagine the countless lives that have sought solace and inspiration within its sacred space.
