Whispers of ancient gods and Christian saints mingle here at the Church of Agios Eleftherios. This tiny Byzantine marvel, affectionately nicknamed “Little Metropolis,” stands in the shadow of its grander neighbor, the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens. The Church of Agios Eleftherios isn’t just a church. It’s a time capsule, a testament to Athens’ layered past. Built upon the ruins of a temple dedicated to Eileithyia, the goddess of childbirth, the Church of Agios Eleftherios now honors Saint Eleftherios, protector of pregnant women. The church’s construction is a mystery, with estimates ranging from the 9th to the early 13th century. Archbishop Michael Acominatus Choniates, a man who revered ancient Greek history, is often credited with its creation. He led Athens from 1180 to 1204. Unlike other Byzantine churches in Athens, the Church of Agios Eleftherios is constructed primarily of spolia. These are repurposed marble blocks and reliefs from older structures. Imagine the stories these ancient stones could tell. A frieze of 90 sculptural panels wraps around the church. These panels depict a mix of ancient motifs and Christian symbols. The Church of Agios Eleftherios showcases the classic cross-in-square design, topped with an octagonal Athenian dome. However, its facade, echoing the style of an ancient temple, distinguishes it. The Little Metropolis served as Athens’ public library in the 19th century. It was meticulously restored to its original Byzantine splendor in 1856. Most recently, in 2023, it served as the location for the lying-in-state of Constantine II, the last king of Greece. Here, at the Church of Agios Eleftherios, the echoes of ancient Greece intertwine with the whispers of Byzantine devotion, creating a truly unique and memorable experience.
