“A profound sanctuary,” he mused, “built by a saint for the faithful.” The Ιερός Ναός Αγίου Νεκταρίου Αιγίνης, a beacon of faith and healing, stands before you. A place where countless pilgrims have sought solace and miracles. Saint Nektarios, a prolific writer, theologian, and miracle worker, dedicated his life to serving God and his fellow man. Born Anastasios Kefalas in 1846, he embraced monastic life at the unusual age of 30, taking the name Nektarios. He served as a distinguished preacher and bishop, facing unjust accusations and exile due to the jealousy of others. The church we stand before is a testament to his enduring legacy. Upon returning to Greece, Nektarios poured his energy into education and ministry, eventually establishing the Holy Trinity Monastery on Aegina in 1904. It was here, surrounded by devoted nuns, that he spent his final years, tending gardens, carrying stones, and overseeing construction, all while continuing to preach and offer spiritual guidance. He passed away in 1920 at the age of 74, leaving behind a legacy of faith and countless reported miracles. The church of Agios Nektarios is still under construction, yet its grandeur is evident. Inside, the mausoleum on the right side holds the saint’s remains, a site of pilgrimage for those seeking healing and blessings. Ascend the stairs to the Monastery of the Holy Trinity, where 14 nuns continue the tradition of prayer and service. The monastery has recently expanded with a guesthouse. Consider this: the hill on which it stands is named Xantos, derived from “xagnadema” – lookout point.
