Several architects shaped the cathedral’s final form. Theophilus Hansen created the initial drawings. Dimitrios Zezos later introduced a Greco-Byzantine style. After Zezos died, François Boulanger and Panayotis Kalkos continued the work.
Materials from ruined Byzantine churches were incorporated into the construction. Piridon Giallinas and Alexander Seitz created the internal wall paintings. Konstantinos Fanellis from Smyrna crafted the ornaments. Georgios Fitalis designed the sculptural elements.
