“This church seems oddly familiar,” the old woman muttered, clutching her husband’s hand. Right here, standing in Eleftherias Square, is the Ευαγγελισμός. This magnificent church, also known as the Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary, isn’t just a place of worship. It represents the complex history of Rhodes. Originally, the church standing here belonged to the Knights of the Order of St John. Tragically, in 1856 it was completely destroyed by a lightning strike. For many years, only ruins marked the spot. Then, in 1925, during the Italian rule, they rebuilt the church. They used original drawings to make it as close to the original as possible! After World War II, things changed again. The church was given to the Greek Orthodox Church. Today, you can still admire the grand gothic style of its exterior, left untouched from the Knights’ era. Step inside, and you’ll be greeted by breathtaking Byzantine-style murals. These were added after the war and offer a fascinating contrast to the building’s architecture. So, as you can see, this church, the Ευαγγελισμός, isn’t just a beautiful landmark. It’s a testament to Rhodes’ resilience, its ability to rise from ashes, embracing different cultures and beliefs over the centuries.
