Hidden within Agia Paraskevi, Athens, lies the Lycée Franco-Hellénique Eugène Delacroix. It stands as a testament to a unique partnership. Imagine being a student here, immersed in both Greek and French cultures. The Lycée Franco-Hellénique Eugène Delacroix, or LFHED, isn’t just any school. It’s a vibrant hub of international education, a bridge between two distinct worlds. It began in 1974, on the grounds of a smaller school called “Collaros”. Two visionary leaders, Konstantinos Karamanlis and Valéry Giscard d’Estaing, championed its creation. They dreamt of a school that would not only teach two curricula but also weave together two cultures. Their vision materialized in 1975, with the Greek state providing land for the school. This required a special arrangement. A Franco-Hellenic association, the Panhellenic Association for Education (AFHE), was formed to manage the long-term lease. This was necessary because a foreign government couldn’t hold a 99-year lease directly. In 1986, an international agreement solidified the school’s status as a foreign school. Its charter, published in 1988, entrusted the school’s management to the Union for French Language Teaching in Greece (AEFG). Now, fast forward to 2008. The school receives a new name, honoring the French Romantic painter Eugène Delacroix. Lycée Franco-Hellénique Eugène Delacroix becomes part of a global network of 500 French schools abroad. The school’s success is striking. In 2019, the DNB exams saw a 100% success rate. The French Baccalaureate also boasts a 97.5% success rate. Furthermore, 100% of students gained admission to Greek universities, with a majority accepted into Athens’ prestigious institutions. The Lycée Franco-Hellénique Eugène Delacroix is more than a school. It’s a symbol of international collaboration and a testament to the power of education. As you walk away, consider the lives shaped within these walls, the blending of cultures, and the pursuit of knowledge that continues to flourish within the Lycée Franco-Hellénique Eugène Delacroix.
