“Where did Eleftherios go?” That’s what someone in Washington, D.C., asked when the statue of Eleftherios Venizelos disappeared for restoration. Today, we stand before a tribute to this great statesman: the Eleutherios Venizelos Bust.
Eleutherios Venizelos was a towering figure in modern Greek history. This bust commemorates his significant contributions. Venizelos served multiple terms as Prime Minister of Greece. He was a key figure in shaping the country’s political landscape in the early 20th century.
The full-length bronze statue of Eleftherios Venizelos was crafted by Yannis Pappas. Pappas, born in 1913, was a renowned Greek sculptor. He knew Venizelos personally through his father. His father served as a minister in Venizelos’s cabinet. The statue was erected in 1969. It stands in Eleftherias Park, on Vassilissis Sofias Avenue.
Pappas created numerous statues of Venizelos. You can find them across Greece. They stand in front of the Hellenic Parliament in Athens. Other statues are in Thessaloniki and Heraklion on Crete.
Interestingly, a smaller-scale version of the Eleftherios Venizelos statue in Eleftherias Park exists. It stands at the Greek Embassy in Washington, D.C. The Benaki Museum in Athens owns the only other identical copy.
The statue in Washington, D.C., underwent a restoration. Artists Antonia Papatzanaki and Vasili Vasili oversaw the project. They worked with contractor George Marafatsos. Alekos Pappas, son of the sculptor, gave his consent.
Nickos Kastrinakis is the President of the Venizelos Foundation USA. He expressed excitement about Venizelos being properly represented again. He noted the community’s interest in the statue. People shared their feelings on social media.
The restoration sparked considerable interest. Lefteris Hazapis captured the community’s sentiment. He posted a photo of the empty base. He then shared a photo of the restored statue. He called it the “metamorphic apotheosis of Eleftherios Venizelos.”
