Chaidari, a suburb west of Athens, has a story that stretches back centuries, but a darker chapter unfolded here during World War II. This camp, known as the “Bastille of Greece,” became a place of suffering, marked by starvation, forced labor, and executions. Many prisoners were deported to other camps in Germany and Poland, their fates often unknown. The municipality’s logo poignantly depicts Block 15 of the former camp, a constant reminder of the horrors endured. After the war, Chaidari became a powerful symbol of resistance against the occupation. The camp itself, initially off-limits, gradually opened for commemorations.
