“The old man of Democracy.” Do you hear it? This affectionate whisper once echoed through Greece. It honored Georgios Papandreou.

Let’s gather around this statue. We will explore the life and legacy of a man. He shaped modern Greek politics. This is the Georgios A. Papandreou Statue. It stands as a testament to his enduring influence.

Georgios Papandreou was born in 1888. He hailed from Kalentzi in the Achaea region. His father was an Orthodox archpriest. Papandreou studied law in Athens and political science in Berlin. He was deeply influenced by German social democracy.

Papandreou’s political journey spanned over five decades. He served three terms as Prime Minister of Greece. These were in 1944-1945, 1963, and 1964-1965. He also held the position of deputy prime minister from 1950 to 1952. He served under Nikolaos Plastiras and Sofoklis Venizelos.

His early career involved supporting Eleftherios Venizelos. This support earned him the governorship of Chios after the Balkan Wars. During World War I, he stood firmly against the pro-German monarch. He mobilized anti-monarchist forces in the islands.

In 1935, Papandreou founded the Democratic Socialist Party of Greece. His opposition to the monarchy led to exile. The Greek royalist dictator Ioannis Metaxas exiled him in 1938.

During the Axis occupation of Greece in World War II, Italian authorities imprisoned him. Fleeing to the Middle East, he joined the government-in-exile. King Georgios II appointed him prime minister with British support. This led to the Lebanon conference and the Caserta Agreement. These sought to unify Greece amidst internal conflicts.

After liberation, Papandreou entered Athens in 1944. He served as prime minister in the government of National Unity. He aimed to reconcile the divided nation.

The period from 1952 to 1961 was challenging. Liberal forces weakened. Papandreou accused Sofoklis Venizelos of ineffective leadership.

In 1961, he founded the Centre Union Party. This revived Greek liberalism. His party won the 1963 and 1964 elections. His progressive policies sparked opposition from conservatives.

King Constantine II dismissed Papandreou’s government in July 1965. This was due to a dispute over the Ministry of Defence.

Following the 1967 military coup, Papandreou was arrested. He died under house arrest in 1968. His funeral became a massive anti-dictatorship demonstration. He is buried alongside his son Andreas at the First Cemetery of Athens.

Georgios Papandreou’s legacy includes his fight for democracy. He was known as one of Greece’s best orators. His premiership saw progressive social reforms. These included improvements in health and education.

Remember Georgios Papandreou. His statue stands. It symbolizes a life dedicated to democracy and social progress in Greece. His influence continues to shape the nation’s political landscape.
