In 1902, a vision took root amidst a sprawling 60-hectare wooded area, donated by the Holy Petrakis Monastery. This vision, brought to life by Sophia Schliemann, was the Sotiria Hospital for Chest Diseases. The Sotiria General Hospital, as it’s known today, stands as a testament to the evolution of medical care in Greece. Initially, the Sotiria served as a sanctuary for those afflicted with tuberculosis, offering respite and treatment in its tranquil setting. Fast forward to 1945, and the Sotiria embraced a new role, housing the University of Athens’ first Tuberculosis Clinic. This marked a significant step in its transformation into a center of medical learning and research. The hospital’s mission expanded yet again in 1950, becoming a hub for the diagnosis and treatment of all respiratory ailments. The Sotiria General Hospital steadily integrated pathological and surgical clinics, solidifying its reputation as the largest pulmonological center in Greece. It stands as one of the most respected institutions of its kind in Europe. The Sotiria played a pivotal role during the challenging years of the 2020-2022 coronavirus pandemic. The Non-profit Civil Company AEGEAS, recognizing the hospital’s vital contribution, stepped forward with generous donations. These donations facilitated critical upgrades, including a new cardiac catheterization unit and a much-needed renovation of the 2nd Pulmonology Clinic. The modernized clinic now boasts 30 state-of-the-art beds, improved sanitary facilities, and dedicated spaces for doctors and essential services. AEGEAS’s support also extended to the creation of a new Haemodynamic Laboratory. This modern unit, equipped with a mixed digital coronary angiography system, became a reality thanks to the company’s generosity. Even during the peak of the pandemic, this laboratory facilitated groundbreaking invasive cardiology procedures. The procedures went beyond coronary disease, extending to structural heart conditions. The Sotiria General Hospital continues to evolve, with plans for a new angiographic imaging system in 2024. As you stand before the Sotiria, imagine the countless lives touched within its walls. From its humble beginnings as a tuberculosis sanatorium, it has grown into a beacon of hope and healing for generations.
