It was founded by Thomas Burke Floyd Jr., a name forever etched in the annals of Gamma Eta. It started as a colony named Alpha Pi Alpha, the tenth fraternity on Georgia Tech’s campus. The journey from colony to chartered chapter was one of dedication and perseverance. Finally, on September 6, 1916, at the 77th General Convention in Saratoga, New York, Gamma Eta received its charter. The chapter officially became active on January 16, 1917. Thirty eager young men formed the first initiated class, marking the beginning of a legacy. Since that day, over 2,000 individuals have joined the ranks of Gamma Eta, each contributing to its vibrant tapestry. Beta Theta Pi’s history extends far beyond Georgia Tech. Founded in 1839 at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, it is one of North America’s oldest fraternities.
