Hadrian’s Aqueduct isn’t just some ancient ruin. It’s a testament to Roman ingenuity. Construction began in 125 AD. It was completed around 140 AD. The completion of the Marathon Dam in 1929 reduced the aqueduct’s importance. It remained a supplementary water source for many years. Today sadly much of the aqueduct is destroyed. Urban development and construction projects like the metro and Olympic Games caused damage. Despite this 390 of the original 465 wells have been located. 228 are visible. 174 are even in public spaces.
But the story of Hadrian’s Aqueduct isn’t over. There are ongoing efforts to restore it. Engineers and scientists are assessing the quality and quantity of the water. The goal is to use the water for irrigation. This project aims to preserve this monument while also creating more green spaces in Athens.
