Welcome to the Agios Gerasimos Monastery a place steeped in history and miracles. Located on Kefalonia this monastery holds the remains of its namesake saint. Agios Gerasimos a remarkable figure whose life spanned centuries.
Born in 1509 in Trikala he was a member of the esteemed Notaras family. This family held prominence during the Byzantine rule of Constantine Palaiologos. His devout upbringing instilled in him a deep faith. A faith that would guide his journey. He witnessed the martyrdom of Christians in Constantinople. This moved him to dedicate his life to monasticism.
His spiritual journey led him to Mount Athos the Holy Land and other sacred sites. He immersed himself in ascetic practices. Eventually he settled in a secluded Kefalonian cave. There he restored an ancient church. He built a convent around it. The convent stands today as a testament to his devotion.
Agios Gerasimos’s relics are remarkably preserved. They remain incorrupt a testament to his holiness. The relics exude a divine fragrance. They are a source of blessings and miracles for the faithful. He passed away on August 15 1579. His feast day is celebrated annually on August 16. Another commemoration occurs on October 20 celebrating the translation of his relics.
The monastery itself is a magnificent structure. It features a modern church richly decorated with ancient icons. Murals depict biblical scenes. The death of Agios Gerasimos is also depicted. Christ is shown holding the saint’s soul. The soul is portrayed as a child in swaddling clothes.
Outside you’ll find plane trees and wells. These were said to be planted and dug by the saint himself. The area is known for its abundance of wells. The monastery also preserves his hermitage. It consists of two underground rooms accessible via a narrow passage and ladder. It offers a glimpse into the saint’s simple life.
Thousands of pilgrims visit yearly seeking blessings and miracles. They come from across the globe. Some even walk there. They make the pilgrimage to honour Agios Gerasimos.
