Was Philothei of Athens a defiant woman, a beacon of hope, or simply a product of her time? Here at Agia Filothei, that question hangs in the air. Agia Filothei is more than just a place of worship. It’s a testament to a woman who dared to challenge the norms of 16th-century Ottoman Greece. Born Revoula Benizelos in Athens in 1522, she was raised in a prominent and wealthy family. Her life could have been one of comfort and privilege. Instead, she chose a path of service and defiance. Agia Filothei is dedicated to this remarkable woman, a saint and martyr in the eyes of the Eastern Orthodox Church. Married young against her will, widowed at a young age, she refused to remarry and dedicated her life to prayer and helping others. Inheriting her family’s wealth, she used it not for personal gain but to establish St. Andrew’s Monastery. This place wasn’t just a convent. It was a refuge for young women, teaching them practical skills like weaving and cooking, empowering them for a life of independence. But Agia Filothei’s compassion went even further. She is especially remembered for ransoming Greek slaves from the Ottoman Turks, providing shelter and safety to women who had been taken into harems. Imagine the courage this took, defying the powerful Ottomans and offering sanctuary to those most vulnerable. She helped them escape to islands like Tzia, Andros, and Aegina. This brave act landed her in trouble with authorities more than once. Her monasteries were raided, her resources depleted. Yet, Agia Filothei persevered. Her unwavering commitment to her cause eventually led to her martyrdom. Beaten severely at her Patesia monastery in 1588, she died from her injuries the following year.
