Perhaps you’ve wondered about the small cliff near Agia Marina. It played a role in old traditions. Agia Marina is the impressive church we are now approaching. It overlooks the Thissio area. You can see a lovely view of Athens from here.

Agia Marina Church stands next to the National Observatory. It is also beneath Pnyx Hill. This location has significance tied to traditional practices. These practices relate to safe pregnancies and labor.

The Agia Marina we see today was built on the site of an earlier temple. That temple dated back to the 19th century. Construction on this church started in 1924. It finished in 1927. Achilleas Georgiadis was the Greek architect. He undertook the temple’s construction. The foundations were laid in 1922.

Agia Marina is a four-aisled basilica. It features an impressive dome. Its architectural style is an elegant Byzantine design. The interior boasts frescoes. Renowned painters Graikos and Kandris completed them. This occurred during the 1930s. The frescoes have distinctive Art Nouveau references. Georgios Nomikos designed the skillfully crafted wooden temple. Visitors are often impressed by it.

The present Agia Marina building includes a smaller cave-built temple. It is dedicated to Saint Marina. You will find it on the south-eastern side. This smaller church dates back to the 11th century. It contains murals from the 17th century. They are not in good condition. Yet we know they depict key scenes. These include the Birth of Christ. Also, the Nativity and Baptism are shown. The Crucifixion, Transfiguration and Pentecost are depicted too.

The location of Saint Marina is special. It is linked to older practices. These concern safe pregnancy and labor. Women would visit Agia Marina. They would slide on the small cliff next to it. This was believed to ensure a painless birth. It also ensured the baby’s wellbeing.

Agia Marina is celebrated on July 17th. This is the Saint’s day. Remember the women who sought blessings here. They hoped for safe childbirth.

Look closely at the murals. They show the artistry of the 1930s. Agia Marina offers more than beauty. It offers a connection to Athens’ past. It connects to traditions of faith and hope.
