Chrysostomos of Smyrna: a name that echoes with courage and tragedy. Here, in Thessaloniki, his statue stands as a powerful reminder of a life dedicated to faith, Hellenism, and his flock. Born in 1867 in Triglia, Bithynia, Chrysostomos rose through the ranks of the Orthodox Church, becoming the Metropolitan of Drama in 1902. His time in Drama was marked by his commitment to education, community building, and support for the Greek population. His actions, however, led to his exile by Ottoman authorities in 1907. Yet, this did not deter him. In 1910, he was elected Metropolitan of Smyrna, a city teeming with a diverse population of Greeks, Turks, and Armenians. Chrysostomos’s leadership extended to all, providing aid and support during a time of escalating tensions. World War I brought further hardship, but Chrysostomos remained a steadfast beacon for his community, even helping refugees find safety in the Aegean islands. This led to a second exile in 1914. After the war, Chrysostomos returned to Smyrna in 1919, as the Greek army occupied the city. He continued his charitable work, tirelessly advocating for the needs of all the city’s inhabitants. However, peace was short-lived. The Greco-Turkish War brought tragedy to Smyrna, and Chrysostomos faced a terrible choice. He could flee and save himself, or stay with his people. He chose to stay. In September 1922, as Turkish forces retook Smyrna, Chrysostomos was captured. He refused to abandon his flock. A mob, fueled by hatred and violence, lynched him. The details are brutal, his death a horrific example of the dark side of war. The statue before you, crafted by Thanasis Aparte, captures Chrysostomos’s strength and unwavering spirit. His raised hand, eternally frozen mid-gesture, reminds us of his courage in the face of adversity. The staff in his other hand symbolizes his pastoral role, a shepherd who gave his life for his sheep. The Άγιος Χρυσόστομος Σμύρνης Statue stands not just as a memorial to a fallen leader but also as a symbol of resilience, faith, and the enduring spirit of Hellenism.
