He rose to become Bishop of Tremithus and played a crucial role at the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD. There, he famously silenced Arius, not with fiery rhetoric, but with a simple potsherd. He demonstrated the Trinity – one entity composed of three – fire, water, and earth. As he spoke, the potsherd, in his hand, transformed. Fire ignited, water dripped, and only dust remained. This miracle solidified Spyridon’s reputation as a defender of the faith. Centuries later, his incorrupt relics journeyed from Cyprus to Constantinople, finally finding their home here, in Corfu, in the Church of Agios Spyridon. The saint’s presence is palpable here. The church walls whisper tales of his protection, of miracles that saved Corfu from plague and invasion. One story tells of the plague, fleeing the island, scratching a stone in the old citadel in its rage. Another whispers of Spyridon appearing as a monk, wielding a fiery torch, scaring the invading Turkish army in 1716. Even the grand red dome, the highest bell tower in the Ionian Islands, seems to proclaim his glory. Inside, the air is thick with incense and the soft murmur of prayers.
