Towering over the cityscape, Agios Panteleimonas stands as a testament to faith and resilience. This Athens neighborhood owes its name to this prominent church. Agios Panteleimonas is one of the biggest churches in the Balkans.

Construction of Agios Panteleimonas began in the 1920s. It was among the first buildings to use concrete. Initially, only the foundations and the grand cupola were completed. Work was halted, then resumed after World War II. The church was finally completed in the 1970s.

King George I initiated the construction of the Church of Agios Panteleimonas in 1910. The design was masterfully created by architect Ioannis Papadakis. Georgios Nomikos carried on with the design and completed the church. Agios Panteleimonas is one of the first edifices where concrete was used as the building material.

Agios Panteleimonas is located along Acharnon Avenue. It is north of Victoria Square. This location explains why it is often referred to as Agios Panteleimonas Acharnon.

Agios Panteleimonas is a characteristic Orthodox basilica. It dazzles visitors with its enormity. The most impressive feature is its vast dome. The dome’s perimeter is close to that of Agia Sofia in Istanbul. It takes up an extent of almost 1600 square meters. Giannis Karouzos began the interior illustrations in 1984. He was a famous Greek painter.

Besides its religious significance, Agios Panteleimonas has an active clergy. Seminars on Byzantine music are frequently organized here. Traditional organs promote the celebration of Orthodox cultural heritage.

Agios Panteleimonas celebrates its feast day on July 27th. The church is dedicated to Saint Pantaleon.

Agios Panteleimonas has faced challenges. In the late 2000s, many immigrants settled in Agios Panteleimonas. They came from the Middle East and Africa. The rapid increase in immigrants led to an increase in delinquency. This resulted in negative reactions from residents. Support for far-right organizations increased.

Agios Panteleimonas hosts the basketball club Aetos B.C.. They currently play in A2 Ethniki basketball. This is the second division.
