“A whisper of history echoes from these very stones” I began. “Before you stands the Church of Saint Matthew Sinaiton a testament to faith resilience and the enduring spirit of Crete.

This unassuming church holds a remarkable story. It was built in the early 17th century. This was probably as a family chapel. It replaced an older Byzantine church destroyed by a devastating earthquake in 1508. Can you imagine the devastation? The fear? The loss?

Under Ottoman rule this church became incredibly important. It was granted to the Monastery of Saint Catherine of Sinai. This was the only active Orthodox church in what was then known as Chandax the Arabic name for Heraklion. This act was a strategic move to counterbalance the conversion of another significant church into a mosque.

Throughout the centuries the Church of Saint Matthew Sinaiton served as a beacon of hope. Along with the church of Saint Minas it was one of the two main Orthodox churches in Heraklion. Its forecourt became a sacred burial ground for influential members of the Christian community.

Look closely. You can still see two alcoves with stunning frescoes on the north side. And there a built in inscription of 1600 on the south gate stands as a silent witness to time.

Inside this sanctuary you’ll find a treasure trove of portable icons. These are masterpieces of the Cretan School of Iconography. One highlight is ‘The Crucifixion’ painted by Georgios Kastrofylax in 1752. Another icon ‘Saint Titus and scenes of the life of the 10 martyrs’ was painted by Ioannis Kornaros in 1773. These icons aren’t just artwork they are portals into the past. They reflect the deep faith and artistic skill of the era.

The Church of Saint Matthew Sinaiton isn’t just a building. It’s a living chronicle. Its stones whisper tales of earthquakes and Ottoman rule. Its icons speak of unwavering faith and artistic genius. It stands as a symbol of enduring strength a testament to a community that refused to let its spirit be broken. As we move on remember the enduring legacy of this extraordinary place. This small unassuming church is a vital part of Heraklion’s rich and compelling history.”
