Agios Ioannis, or Saint John, is a name shared by more than one sacred place in Crete. But the Agios Ioannis I speak of today sits 73km south of Heraklion. It is near the village of Kapetaniana. Imagine a winding dirt road snaking from Kapetaniana down from the Kofinas Peak. This peak is the highest of the Asterousia Mountains. It leads to a coastal village. That village is Agios Ioannis.
The drive itself is an adventure. You see incredible views of the South Cretan Sea. The rugged landscape unfolds before you. Finally you arrive in Agios Ioannis. The residents, mostly from Kapetaniana, spend their summers here. This village is named after an old cavernous monastery. This monastery is dedicated to Saint John. It is adorned with impressive frescoes.
Agios Ioannis is built on the base of the small peninsula of Ponda. In front of the village, west of Ponda, lies the tranquil beach of Agios Ioannis. The beach has small pebbles and turquoise waters. The rocky seabed is ideal for fishing. It is a peaceful place with a few taverns and a mini market.
But Agios Ioannis offers more than just a beach. For those seeking solitude, Eligia beach is a short distance to the east. It is a beautiful beach with fine pebbles. Eligia is located at the exit of the Volahas gorge. Next to the beach is Princess Cave also known as Gourounospilios. According to a local legend the cave once housed the treasure of a princess. There is also a small well known as Kakopigado. A stair leads to its bottom where you can drink fresh water all year round.
