Have you heard the story of Agios Eleftherios? It’s a story of faith, of courage, and of enduring love a story that resonates deeply in this beautiful church.
The church of Agios Eleftherios holds a special significance for the people of Rhodes. Dedicated to Saint Eleftherios, a prominent figure in early Christianity, this church is believed to offer protection to expectant mothers and those struggling with difficult pregnancies. Saint Eleftherios was a young man, ordained a deacon at the age of fifteen, a priest at eighteen, and a bishop at twenty. He dedicated his life to promoting Christianity and helping his followers throughout Illyricum, which is in modern-day Albania. Saint Eleftherios’s unwavering faith and charismatic personality deeply impressed King Lucius of Britain, who wrote requesting conversion for himself and his people. This act of faith, however, resulted in his persecution at the hands of the Roman Emperor Hadrian, who ordered his arrest and execution.
But the story doesn’t end there. As the centurion Felix moved to take Saint Eleftherios to Rome for trial, he was captivated by the bishop’s sermon. So spellbinding was the message that Felix begged to be converted to Christianity. Touched by his sincerity, Saint Eleftherios forgave him. However, the centurion remained committed to his duty, and the bishop was taken to face the emperor.
In an attempt to sway Saint Eleftherios from his beliefs, Hadrian subjected him to brutal torture involving boiling oil, resin, heated irons, and even throwing him to the lions. Yet, miraculously, Saint Eleftherios emerged unscathed. It was left to clubbing to finally bring an end to the bishop’s life, on December 15. His mother, Anthia, who had long been a devoted Christian and had entrusted his education to Bishop Anictus, was also beheaded.
The enduring love and devotion of Saint Eleftherios and his mother are forever memorialized in the church that bears his name. It is said that women with difficult pregnancies would often dedicate their children to Saint Eleftherios, a testament to the powerful and unwavering faith of the people of Rhodes.
So, as you stand before the beautiful church of Agios Eleftherios, take a moment to breathe in the stories woven within its walls – stories of strength, of love, and of faith. It’s a treasure of Rhodes that we can all learn from.
