The scent of incense hangs heavy in the air. Can you smell it? This is Agios Athanasios in Thessaloniki.

Welcome to Agios Athanasios a town steeped in history and resilience. It’s more than just a place on a map. Agios Athanasios is a testament to the enduring spirit of those who rebuilt their lives after the devastating events of 1922.

In the early 1920s waves of refugees arrived here. They came from Eastern Thrace and Asia Minor. They fled their homes during the population exchange between Greece and Turkey. Many were farmers and herders. Their journey was long and arduous. They brought with them their traditions and customs. These formed the bedrock of the new community.

The first refugees found shelter in Kavakli manoir. Twenty-five families from Kermeni in Eastern Thrace were the pioneers. They settled into the existing buildings. Others found shelter in the manors Paliocopi Tsalkato Kouloupantza and Tsalikovo. Life was difficult. Resources were scarce. Yet the community thrived. It was built on shared experiences and mutual support. Agios Athanasios became a symbol of hope. It demonstrated the ability of the human spirit to overcome adversity.

The name Perintos reflects the refugees’ origins in Eastern Thrace. It evokes a sense of their past and their connection to their homeland. In 1928 the town was officially renamed Agios Athanasios. This new name represents the hope for a better future.

This small church Saint George is the oldest surviving building. It witnessed the growth and transformation of Agios Athanasios. Its enduring presence testifies to the community’s spirit. It showcases its resilience.
