Marvelous isn’t it? The Church of Agios Konstantinos and Agia Eleni stands before you. This impressive temple is one of Athens’ most beautiful ecclesiastical edifices.

Its story begins in 1868. Prince Konstantinos son of King George and Queen Olga was born. The church was built to celebrate his birth. Construction started in 1871 and wasn’t completed until 1905. The renowned architect Lyssandros Kaftantzoglou designed it. He cleverly blended neoclassical and Renaissance styles. The result is a magnificent three-aisled basilica.

Notice the elegant dome. It’s adorned with aristocratic blue copper leaves. The two octagonal belfries are equally striking. The interior frescoes are masterpieces by Anastasios Loukidis and Fotis Kontoglou. They are truly breathtaking.

The church wasn’t always so glorious. Powerful earthquakes in 1981 and 1991 caused extensive damage. Restoration took over 15 years. It was a painstaking process. The church now stands as a testament to careful restoration. It is an integral part of modern Athens’ history.
