Was the Colossus of Rhodes truly a giant bestriding the harbor? Here, at the site of the Statue of Glory, the question lingers in the air. We stand at the supposed location of the Colossus of Rhodes, a statue so grand it was declared one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The Colossus of Rhodes was built to honor Helios, the Greek sun god, after the Rhodians’ victory over Demetrius Poliocetes in 205 BC. It’s believed the statue took 12 years to construct, under the skilled hands of sculptor Chares of Lindos. The Colossus of Rhodes, a bronze giant standing 33 meters tall, was a symbol of gratitude and a testament to the island’s strength. Popular depictions often portray the Colossus straddling the harbor entrance. However, historical texts describe the statue standing “over sea and land”, suggesting a different location. It may have graced one side of the Mandraki harbor, welcoming ships as they approached. Or, it could have stood further within the city, its imposing figure visible from both land and sea. Sadly, the Colossus’ reign was short-lived. A mere 56 years after its completion, a devastating earthquake brought the giant down, breaking it at the knees. The scattered remains lay around the harbor for 800 years, a stark reminder of nature’s power. An oracle advised against rebuilding the Colossus of Rhodes, and the Rhodians heeded the warning. The broken pieces remained until 654 AD, when Arab forces invaded Rhodes. The remains were then sold, loaded onto 900 camels, and transported away, ending the saga of the mighty Colossus. Though the Colossus of Rhodes is gone, its legend continues to inspire awe. It reminds us of the fleeting nature of glory, yet the enduring power of human ingenuity.
