This statue honors Nikolaos Plastiras. He was a general and three-time Prime Minister of Greece. Plastiras was born in 1883. He died in 1953. His life spanned a tumultuous period in Greek history.

The Greco-Turkish War of 1919-1922 further cemented his reputation. He commanded the 5/42 Evzone Regiment. The Turks called him “Kara Biber” meaning “Black Pepper”. His regiment was known as “Satan’s Army”.

After the Greek defeat, Plastiras led the 11 September 1922 Revolution. This deposed King Constantine I. Plastiras reorganized the army. One controversial act was the trial and execution of royalist politicians. They were blamed for the Asia Minor Disaster.

Plastiras faced many challenges as a leader. He had to manage 1.3 million refugees. The country’s economy was ruined. Despite these issues, he helped lay the foundation for the Second Hellenic Republic.

In 1924, he retired from the army. The National Assembly declared him “worthy of the fatherland”. They gave him the rank of lieutenant general.

Even his enemy, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, admired him.

Plastiras’ political career continued. He founded the National Progressive Centre Union. He served as Prime Minister three times. He tried to reconcile the nation after the Greek Civil War. Plastiras initiated economic recovery programs. One example is the dam at the Tavropos River. It now bears his name.

His policy of conciliation was not always popular. He faced opposition from both sides. After losing the 1952 elections, his career ended. He died in poverty in 1953.
