Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Seoul’s history, Saemoonan Church stands as a testament to enduring faith. Saemoonan Church isn’t just any church. It’s the first organized Presbyterian church in South Korea, a beacon of Protestantism in the nation. Founded in 1887 by the American missionary Horace Grant Underwood, Saemoonan Church has witnessed over a century of Korean history unfold. Underwood, a pivotal figure in Korean history, not only established this church but also founded prominent institutions like Kyungsin High School, Yonsei University, and Severance Hospital. Saemoonan Church is often referred to as the “Mother Church of Korean Protestantism,” a title that speaks volumes about its influence. The church’s connection to influential figures like Kim Kyu-sik, Ahn Chang-ho, and Choi Hyeon-bae further solidifies its importance in shaping modern Korea. The church has seen its share of changes, having occupied six different chapels throughout its history. The latest chapel, completed in 2019, is an architectural marvel designed by Lee Eunseok, a renowned expert in religious architecture. Its unique design, resembling a mother’s outstretched arms, has earned both praise and controversy. While the exterior has garnered international acclaim, with features like the curved surface being featured on the cover of Phaidon’s “The World’s Best Architecture,” the interior has sparked debate within the architectural community. Some believe the modifications made during construction detract from the architect’s original vision. Saemoonan Church’s journey hasn’t been without its trials. The appointment of Reverend Lee Sang-hak as senior pastor in 2017, while celebrated by some, was met with controversy due to the confidential nature of the selection process. Furthermore, Reverend Lee’s doctoral dissertation on “Sin and Salvation Based on the Han Experience of Koreans” and a subsequent sermon sparked theological debate. Despite these challenges, Saemoonan Church remains a cornerstone of Korean Protestantism, a living testament to its rich history and enduring influence on the nation’s spiritual landscape.
