Mortar Battery No. 1. A rather unusual name, isn’t it? Here, at the edge of Kronstadt, stands a testament to Russia’s military ingenuity. Мортирная батарея № 1, as it’s known in Russian, was built between 1893 and 1897. This imposing structure, designed by engineer V.A. Kuharsky, was part of Kronstadt Fortress’s coastal defense system. Imagine, eleven 280mm mortars, each capable of launching a projectile weighing 56 kilograms, a distance of up to 12 kilometers. Мортирная батарея № 1 wasn’t just about brute force. Its strategic placement allowed it to control the southern channel and protect the fortress from naval attacks. The battery played a vital role in safeguarding St. Petersburg, then the capital of Russia. Over the years, Мортирная батарея № 1 underwent several modernizations. During the 20th century, its original armament was replaced. In 1952, a 130mm береговая подвижная артустановка СМ-4-1, a coastal mobile artillery unit, was installed. By 1953, a 25mm automatic coastal artillery unit, the 2М-3М, took its place on the high ground. Today, as you stand before Мортирная батарея № 1, its weathered walls whisper tales of past conflicts. While its guns are silent now, the echoes of their thunderous roar still reverberate through time. It stands not just as a relic of war, but as a symbol of Kronstadt’s enduring spirit.
