Shimojima Elementary School’s bell echoed one last time in March 2024. This marked the end of its 49-year history. It merged with Yatsuka Elementary School, leaving behind a legacy of memories and laughter. Shimojima Elementary, located in Shimojima, Moriguchi City, held a special closing event. It was called the “Shimojishima Ribbon Festival”. The festival took place on March 24, 2024, from noon to 7 pm at the school. Activities also spilled over into the adjacent Shimojima Park from 10:30 am to 3 pm. The event promised performances, flea markets, and even melon pan sales. A fireworks display lit up the school grounds that evening. This provided a final, spectacular send-off. Shimojima Elementary School, deeply embedded in the heart of the Shimojima community, transitioned into a new chapter. The school grounds and Shimojima Park are slated to become the site of a new compulsory education school. Construction is scheduled to begin between July and September 2025. The new school is expected to open on April 1, 2027. This will usher in a new era of education for the community. Shimojima Elementary School may be gone, but its spirit lives on. It will continue to inspire generations to come.
