Established 82 years ago this is Greater St Stephen Full Gospel Baptist Church. It began in Uptown New Orleans with just 69 people. One was Debra B Morton’s grandmother. The church moved twice in its early years. It found a home at Ladies Providence Hall then a two-story building on South Liberty Street.
Greater St Stephen Full Gospel Baptist Church grew. Under Bishop Paul S Morton’s leadership it expanded. It became known as One Church in Three Locations. A large sanctuary opened in New Orleans East. Another in the Westbank. The church launched a major expansion project. It included an educational center a nursery and a senior citizens home.
Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans. The Mortons and their congregation evacuated to Atlanta. The storm damaged all three church locations. The smaller Uptown and Westbank buildings were repaired. The East location was later rebuilt. Sadly an electrical fire destroyed the Uptown church in 2008. The congregation found temporary homes at Temple Sinai and McDonogh 35.
The Mortons and their parishioners rebuilt. They focused on their mission winning souls and serving the community. They established community outreach programs. They offer after-school tutoring and a summer camp for youth. Debra B Morton co-pastors Changing A Generation Full Gospel Baptist Church in Atlanta. She also leads Greater St Stephen. She followed her husband Bishop Paul S Morton Sr. She is a renowned preacher and talks about spirituality in everyday life on television and radio.
Greater St Stephen Full Gospel Baptist Church continues its work. It plans to rebuild the Uptown location as a Family Life Center. A parent and child center is planned for the East location. The church continues its relationship with the East New Orleans community. Its parishioners support local businesses. The church thrives despite past hardship. It is a testament to faith community and resilience. Greater St Stephen Full Gospel Baptist Church stands as a beacon of hope in New Orleans.
