Sculpted in stone, emotions frozen in time. This is the essence of Ishino Etegami, the Stone Handscrolls of Tonosho. Located in Namiuchi Town, these unique monuments capture the spirit of artistry and local pride. Ishino Etegami showcases granite from Shodoshima Island, carved with handscroll designs gathered from across Japan. Local stonemasons, inheriting generations of skill, meticulously bring these designs to life. Each piece reflects the artist’s vision and the unique character of the stone. Two particularly striking Stone Handscrolls grace Namiuchi. One, titled “Threads of Peace”, sits at the northwest entrance of Namikoshi Park. The other, “Echoes”, stands on the park’s east side. “Threads of Peace” measures 90cm wide, 103cm long, and 150cm high. “Echoes” is 60cm wide, 100cm long, and 165cm high. Both weigh approximately one ton. These impressive sculptures add a touch of artistic flair to the park. They symbolize the enduring connection between art, nature, and the human spirit. They serve as a testament to the power of collaboration between artists and craftsmen. Visit Ishino Etegami and experience the beauty and strength of these Stone Handscrolls.
