Amidst the bustling heart of Times Square stands the Church of Saint Mary the Virgin. Its elegant French Gothic architecture a striking contrast to the bright lights and billboards. This isn’t just any church. It’s a hidden gem a testament to faith and resilience.

The Church of Saint Mary the Virgin boasts a rich history. Founded in 1868 its story begins with Thomas McKee Brown. He envisioned a church expressing the full Catholic tradition within the Episcopal Church. His dream led to the first church built on West 45th Street.

This original building however proved too small. By 1890 the congregation had outgrown its space. A generous legacy from Miss Sara L Cooke made a new church possible. This time the Church of Saint Mary the Virgin would be truly grand.

Construction of the current building began in 1894. The LeBrun firm designed it. It was a marvel of engineering. Using a hidden steel skeleton a revolutionary technique for its time. The resulting church is 60 feet wide and 180 feet long. Its nave rises 80 feet from floor to ceiling.

The Church of Saint Mary the Virgin’s beauty isn’t limited to its impressive structure. Inside vivid colors abound thanks to a 1996-97 restoration. Cobalt blue vaulting with gold stars creates a breathtaking atmosphere. The church’s dedication to solemn liturgies and choral music enhances its spiritual significance.

The copious use of incense earned the Church of Saint Mary the Virgin a nickname. It is affectionately known as Smoky Mary’s. This reflects its devotion to traditional high church practices.

Today the Church of Saint Mary the Virgin stands as a landmark. It’s a city treasure a place of worship and peace. Its history is a reminder of unwavering faith and the enduring power of community. It’s more than just a building it’s a living legacy. A place where tradition meets modernity in the heart of Times Square.
