Cobblestones whisper tales of pilgrims and new mothers on Rue Saint-Jacques. This street in Vieux-Lille, connecting Place du Lion d’Or and Place aux Bleuets, holds centuries of history. Rue Saint-Jacques isn’t just a charming walkway. It’s a pathway echoing with the footsteps of travelers from a distant era. The street draws its name from the Saint-Jacques Hospital. Founded in 1431 by Isabella of Portugal, it initially served pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago. Later, it became a haven for expectant mothers. Imagine Lille before its 1617 expansion. Rue Saint-Jacques formed part of a crucial route. It connected Arras to Courtrai, Bruges, and Ghent, continuing a vital trade artery through the city. This road followed the path of Rue d’Arras, today known as Rue Pierre-Mauroy, and then Rue Grande-Chaussée. Before the city grew, this road led out through the Courtrai Gate. It crossed the Basse Deûle river via a bridge. This bridge stood near where Rue des Tours meets Rue Saint-Jacques today. The area outside the city walls, known as the Faubourg de Courtrai, began to develop along this road from the 13th century. Interestingly, Rue Saint-Jacques once spanned the Canal des Sœurs Noires via the Saint-Jacques Bridge. This bridge stood close to the Saint-Jacques watering hole, a meeting point of three canals. One of these canals, now concealed, flowed beneath the city to the Basse Deûle. Can you picture it? The confluence of these waterways, the clatter of hooves at the watering hole, the weary pilgrims seeking rest at the hospital. Today, the watering hole is gone, replaced by a parking lot. But the echoes of the past remain, woven into the very fabric of Rue Saint-Jacques.
