Within the vibrant tapestry of Beijing’s art scene, lies the Xu Beihong Memorial Hall (徐悲鴻紀念館). It stands as a testament to a man who bridged the gap between Eastern and Western art. Xu Beihong, a name synonymous with artistic innovation, left an indelible mark on China’s cultural landscape. The Xu Beihong Memorial Hall isn’t merely a museum. It is a journey through the life and works of a master. Originally located on Shoulu Street, the memorial hall found its new home at 53 Xinjiekou North Street in 1983. This move, necessitated by Beijing’s expanding subway system, didn’t diminish its significance. Instead, it allowed for a grander showcase of Xu Beihong’s legacy.

Inside the Xu Beihong Memorial Hall, seven exhibition halls and a lobby await. They house a treasure trove of over 1286 pieces of Xu Beihong’s work. From his renowned horse paintings to his captivating oil paintings, watercolors, powder paintings, and calligraphy, each piece tells a story of his artistic evolution. The museum also houses a collection of 1134 pieces by renowned artists from the Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing Dynasties. These were collected by Xu Beihong himself, offering a glimpse into his artistic influences and inspirations. Xu Beihong, born in 1895, began his artistic journey under the tutelage of his father. He further honed his skills at the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts and later at the Ecole Nationale Superieure de Beaux Arts in Paris. His decade-long stay in Europe exposed him to Western artistic techniques, which he seamlessly integrated with his Chinese roots.

Upon his return to China in 1927, Xu Beihong embarked on a mission to revitalize Chinese art. He established a scientific fine arts education system. He tirelessly created numerous works that blended Chinese and Western techniques. His paintings of animals and birds showcase his mastery of both styles. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, Xu Beihong’s contributions to the art world were further recognized. He became the President of the Central Academy of Fine Arts and Chairman of the China Artists Association. His dedication to art and education cemented his legacy as the “Father of Modern Chinese Painting.” The Xu Beihong Memorial Hall offers a poignant look into the artist’s life. Photographs document his travels, his interactions with schoolchildren, and even telegrams of condolence received upon his untimely death in 1953 at the age of 58. Visiting the Xu Beihong Memorial Hall is a journey through the heart of Chinese art. It’s a celebration of a visionary who dared to bridge cultures. His legacy continues to inspire generations of artists.
