Thirty thousand souls. That’s how many people call Jianwai Subdistrict home. Jianwai Subdistrict sits nestled on the western side of Chaoyang District in Beijing. It’s a vibrant community a bustling microcosm of this sprawling city.

Jianwai Subdistrict’s name is a shortened version of Jianguomenwai Subdistrict. This translates to ‘District Outside of Jianguomen’ referencing its position beyond the old Beijing city walls and the Jianguomen gate. This area has a rich history stretching back centuries.

During the Ming and Qing dynasties Jianwai Subdistrict was part of Daxing County. Its administrative status shifted frequently throughout the 20th century. It was part of various districts and communes before finally becoming the Jianwai Subdistrict we know today. The process was not simple. In 1954 it was divided. One part became Dongbianmen Subdistrict. Another part became Qishengmiao Township. In 1976 several areas merged creating the present Jianwai Subdistrict. However land south of Guanghua Road was excluded from this merger.

Today Jianwai Subdistrict encompasses 4.4 square kilometers. It’s bordered by several other subdistricts and a township. To the north are Hujialou and Chaowai Subdistricts. To the east lie Balizhuang Subdistrict and Gaobeidian Township. Shuangjing Subdistrict is to the south. Finally Jianguomen and Chaoyangmen Subdistricts form its western boundary.

In 2020 Jianwai Subdistrict had a population of 36414 people. This results in a population density of approximately 8300 people per square kilometer. That’s a lot of people packed into a relatively small space. Think of the energy the diversity the stories interwoven in this remarkable place.
