A forty-eight-meter obelisk pierces the sky. This is Victory Square in Saint Petersburg. It stands as a powerful testament to the resilience of Leningrad during the Great Patriotic War. This square wasn’t always a symbol of victory. Before 1971 a royal palace stood here. The Srednerogatsky Palace was a modest stone structure. It was later used as a post house and then an ink factory. The square’s original name Srednyaya Rogatka reflects its past. It means Middle Checkpoint referring to a Russian Empire security point.

Victory Square marks the southern entrance to the city. It’s where highways from Moscow and Kiev converge. It’s also a short trip from Pulkovo Airport. This makes Victory Square a significant gateway to Saint Petersburg. But its location was far from the city’s center in the past. It wasn’t until the mid-20th century that Victory Square became an integral part of the city.

The Monument to the Heroic Defenders of Leningrad is the square’s centerpiece. It was erected in 1975. This commemorated the 30th anniversary of the end of World War II. The monument’s design is striking. It features a high obelisk. A large circular enclosure surrounds the obelisk. Below ground lies a Memorial Hall. This hall houses a poignant collection. Bronze plates chronicle the city’s siege. You can see personal relics such as a loaf of bread from the blockade. An oil lamp shell casings and a Komsomol card pierced by bullets are also on display. The names of 650 Heroes of the Soviet Union are engraved on the walls. These heroes fought bravely during the Battle of Leningrad.

The monument faces Pulkovo Heights. These hills were where German forces were halted in 1941. They remained there until the Siege of Leningrad was broken in January 1944. The monument’s sculptures depict citizens and soldiers. They show their contribution to the city’s defense. The sculptures powerfully depict the raw emotion of that time. The raw emotion is a testament to the endurance of the people.

Victory Square is more than just a monument. It’s a place of reflection and remembrance. It’s a place where history and modernity intersect. As you stand here today you’re not just seeing a square. You’re experiencing a chapter of Saint Petersburg’s enduring story. A story of courage sacrifice and ultimate victory.
