Imagine Florence Colucci, a community activist, standing right where we are now. This is Colucci Playground. It’s a place named in her honor. Let’s delve into the story of this cherished Pelham Bay space.
Florence Colucci was a remarkable woman. She dedicated over 38 years of her life to Pelham Bay. She founded the Pelham Bay Taxpayers and Civic Association. It was the first organization of its kind in the Bronx. Colucci also served on Bronx Community Board 10. She chaired the Northeast Bronx Committee for Neighborhood Schools. Known as “The Voice of Pelham Bay,” she wrote a weekly newspaper column.
Colucci’s impact extended to veterans’ organizations and charities. She supported the Cancer Fund and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. She also aided the March of Dimes. Her commitment to the community was unwavering. After her passing in 1983, Wilkinson Playground was renamed Colucci Playground in her honor.
This playground wasn’t always as modern as it is today. In 2016, a major renovation project began. It was made possible by Councilman James Vacca. He secured $800,000 for the overhaul. The community was actively involved in the planning.
The renovations brought many improvements. A new spray shower was added for children to enjoy during hot summers. The seating area was renovated with decorative pavers. Chess and checker tables were installed. New benches and bicycle racks were added. A wheelchair-accessible drinking fountain was also included. Goldenrain and Filbert trees were planted.
Matt Cruz played little league baseball here as a kid. He said the renovations were long overdue. Michelle Torrioni noted the park’s popularity with younger families. Iris Rodriguez-Rosa highlighted the importance of the spray shower. She emphasized its value during the incredibly hot summers.
Colucci Playground has basketball, baseball, and handball facilities. It is a spacious open space. Unlike some playgrounds, it isn’t fenced in. This adds to the feeling of openness. The community uses this space for many different sports.
Jeremy Lewis plays basketball here. He said the park is well used by people of all ages. He brings his daughter here when she is not in school. He sees the renovations as a step in the right direction.
Councilman Vacca secured additional funding for a recreation and fitness station. It will be installed in the future. Colucci Playground stands as a testament to community spirit. It is a legacy of Florence Colucci’s dedication. Take a moment to appreciate this vibrant space. It is a place where people of all ages can come together.
