Harbour Island a vibrant island neighborhood in Tampa Florida stands before you. It wasn’t always this way. Once known as Seddon Island it was a bustling industrial site. Named after W L Seddon chief engineer for the Seaboard Air Line Railway the island played a crucial role in Tampa’s port development.
In 1906 plans for a new port were unveiled. Seddon’s vision involved dredging a channel and establishing port facilities. His company transformed what was once called Grassy Island into a vital shipping hub. Millions of pounds of phosphate were shipped from Seddon Island from 1908 until the late 1960s. The island housed a phosphate terminal and even had freight rail access.
In 1979 the Seaboard Coast Line sold the 177 acres to the Beneficial Land Corporation. Their ambitious goal was to transform the island into a luxurious waterfront destination. Think Baltimore’s Inner Harbor but in Tampa. Finn M W Caspersen the Beneficial Corporation’s chief executive had a clear vision for this transformation.
The first phase of this ambitious redevelopment didn’t start until 1985. The island still bore the scars of its industrial past. But the vision was about to become reality.
From 1985 to 1999 a unique transportation system connected Harbour Island to downtown Tampa. The Harbour Island People Mover an automated tram system made getting around a breeze. It ran on an elevated guideway connecting the island to the mainland.
Today Harbour Island is a mix of high rise condos apartments and single family homes. There’s even a yacht club for those who love the water. Numerous restaurants and shops cater to the residents and visitors. Jackson’s Bistro Bar & Sushi boasts a 20000 square foot space. Cafe Dufrain is a local hotspot known for its seasonal cuisine and waterfront dining.
The TECO Line Streetcar provides easy access to downtown and Channelside. NEVs connect the island to other areas like Hyde Park. Harbour Island a testament to vision planning and transformation. It’s a jewel in Tampa’s crown. A place where industry once thrived and now luxury and residential life flourish side by side. A place that successfully reinvented itself from humble beginnings to a breathtaking island oasis.
