A towering brick structure. That’s Deliverance Evangelistic Church. It stands before you a testament to faith and perseverance.
Deliverance Evangelistic Church isn’t just a building. It’s a living history. Founded in 1961 with a mere ten members it rapidly grew. Initially meeting in a private residence the congregation quickly outgrew its space. They moved to a building at 25th and Jefferson Streets. The late Reverend Benjamin Smith Sr played a key role in these early meetings.
Growth continued. The church relocated again to 22nd Street and Columbia Avenue. Street evangelism became a cornerstone of their mission. Many found Christ. This success necessitated another move in 1963. This time to a vacant theater in Tioga. The theater could seat 900.
In 1973 the church moved to 4732 North Broad Street. This larger location a reconstructed theater held 3000 people. Closed-circuit television extended the service to even more.
The church’s expansion didn’t end there. On August 30 1992 a new edifice was dedicated. This magnificent building at 2001 West Lehigh Avenue boasts a seating capacity of 5100.
Today Deliverance Evangelistic Church is home to over sixty departments. These provide education leadership training and personal development. The church’s vision continues under the leadership of Pastor Glen Spaulding. He carries on the legacy of faith dedication and community service. Deliverance Evangelistic Church isn’t just a church. It’s a vibrant community a beacon of hope and a symbol of enduring faith in Philadelphia.
