Deep in the heart of New Orleans, stands a testament to faith, resilience, and the ongoing struggle for equality: Saint Augustine’s Church. This isn’t just any church. Saint Augustine’s Church holds the distinction of being the oldest Black Catholic parish in the United States. Its story began in 1841, a time when the nation was sharply divided by slavery.

Founded by free people of color, Saint Augustine’s Church became a beacon of hope and a symbol of defiance against the oppressive system of the time. This very ground was once part of the Claude Tremé plantation. But the spirit of freedom found its home here. Imagine the scene in 1842 when the church was nearing completion. Free people of color, determined to secure their place of worship, engaged in what became known as the “War of the Pews.” They competed with white parishioners to buy pews for their families.

And they won. They purchased half the pews in the center and bought all the seats along the side aisles, which they reserved for enslaved people. Saint Augustine’s Church became a testament to the power of faith and community to transcend even the harshest realities. Over the years, this church has been a cornerstone for the community. It has been a place of solace, a hub for activism, and a stage for incredible music.

The legacy of Saint Augustine’s Church isn’t confined within these walls. One of its most notable parishioners, Homer Plessy, challenged racial segregation laws in the landmark Plessy v. Ferguson case. Even in the face of devastating natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina, the spirit of Saint Augustine’s Church remained unbroken. Threatened with closure in 2006, the parishioners, along with hurricane relief volunteers, staged a sit-in protest. Their unwavering dedication saved the church.

As you stand here, take a moment to appreciate the profound history and the unwavering spirit embodied within the walls of Saint Augustine’s Church. It’s a reminder that faith, resilience, and the pursuit of equality can prevail, even in the face of adversity.
