Gazing upon the Église Saint-Jean-Berchmans, can you sense the echoes of its Jesuit founders? This magnificent church, nestled within the St. Michael’s College complex in Etterbeek, Brussels, isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a testament to history, faith, and architectural brilliance. Église Saint-Jean-Berchmans stands as a beacon of Neo-Romanesque style, its grey and rose freestone façade adorned with a statue of St. Michael the Archangel. The church’s foundation stone was laid in July 1908, and its consecration followed in July 1912. The architect, Joseph Prémont, drew inspiration from the Romanesque churches of the Rhine region, evident in the semi-circular apse at the back of the church. Step inside Église Saint-Jean-Berchmans, and you’ll be greeted by a Latin Cross plan. The central nave, flanked by two aisles, is punctuated by imposing granite columns with intricately carved capitals. Above, six statues of Jesuit saints seem to watch over the congregation. Originally, a grand altar designed by Prémont dominated the sanctuary. This altar, a masterpiece in itself, was even showcased at the Brussels International Exposition of 1910. Sadly, much of the original furniture has been altered following the Second Vatican Council. The stained-glass windows of Église Saint-Jean-Berchmans tell a vibrant story. The lower windows, crafted in Ghent, depict scenes from Jesus’ life. The choir windows, from Antwerp, portray the Holy Trinity, the Four Evangelists, the Four Church Fathers, and eight Jesuit saints. The rose windows are equally captivating. One depicts Belgium’s patron saint, St. Joseph, surrounded by Belgian saints. The other portrays the Tree of Jesse, with the Virgin Mary encircled by figures from the Old Testament. And then there’s the organ. This magnificent instrument, built by Jean-Emile Kerkhoff, boasts three keyboards, a pedalboard, and 36 stops. Its inaugural performance, by none other than Charles-Marie Widor, took place in 1910. Église Saint-Jean-Berchmans has always served as the heart of St. Michael’s College, hosting countless student masses, ceremonies, and even ordinations. Today, it operates independently from the college, offering a wide range of services to the community. As you leave Église Saint-Jean-Berchmans, remember its rich history and architectural beauty, a unique blend of Jesuit tradition and Neo-Romanesque splendor.
